How to Upload Data using Epicor DMT

Epicor DMT (Data Management Tool) is an upload tool developed by Epicor. It is ideal for any Epicor ERP user who wants to upload data directly into Epicor. You may be migrating your data from a previous version of Epicor or to Epicor for the first time from another system.

When uploading data into Epicor, it is important to be aware that Epicor ERP is built off of tables that have very specific relationships to each other. So in DMT, each screen references a different table or mixes of tables. Because of this you will have to upload data in a certain order because some screens are dependent on others. For example, you have to upload a customer file before you can add a customer’s alternative bill-to address.

Example: Customer Upload

In this example, I will be showing how to do a customer upload. This is helpful anytime you need to update your existing customer records or add new customers.

Step 1: Table Creation

Table creation must happen before you upload anything.

Build your table by clicking on the template builder button on the bottom right hand side of the screen.  A screen will prompt you to select additional fields. Click the check boxes to select additional fields. The required fields (columns) are already selected when you open the template builder. After you have what you want selected hit create template.  A .csv will open. This is just a template without any data — yet.

Note: you don’t have to use the template builder, you can add the column headings to your own data. But the template builder is convenient because it has definitions for every field. This helps you know what Epicor tracks.

Step 2: Add your data to your .csv file


After you have your data prepared, click on the Customer Source button then select your table. You can select various file types depending on how your data is structured. A .csv is recommended because it is easy to work with.  A window will pop up and you will select your named file, in this example Customer Upload. The table will populate in the gray preview pane. I recommend checking the count. It shows you how many rows have been imported. This is used to validate that every row of data is showing up correctly. The required columns button is a hyperlink with pop up prompt box of the required fields. Then hit the hyperlink validate columns. This checks two things. One that all the required columns are there and two, that all columns present do not have any errors. If you have errors they will populate in the large white box below the data preview area. For this case, we do not have any errors and a good to move on to the next step.

Step 3: Check the boxes

Your options include: delete (if the data you have in the table is present in Epicor, it will be deleted out of Epicor), add new (add a new line of data), and update (if checked will find that primary key and update anything associated with the primary key).

Step 4: Click the process button

Can be clicked again to pause the upload. Cancel will kill the whole upload. You will be prompted to delete the errors associated with the source. Hit yes to continue with the upload.

Other options while in this view:

  • Write errors to log – Whenever an inputted data contains an error, Epicor will fire off an error message, which is then put in a file contained in a document will all the errors logged.
  • Write error input file – Epicor takes the input (that was attempted to be uploaded) and puts that in a .csv file.  After the upload you will have a file full of lines that didn’t get processed so you know exactly what to fix.
  • Write complete log – Gives you stats on the upload. It tells you the date and time uploaded, the speed of the upload. This is a file of everything that has been uploaded into Epicor.
  • View – Re-opens your source .csv file and there you can edit your .csv file and save it and press the reload button. It will take the new version.
  • Clear – Clears your table preview.

Step 5: Success!

Your data runs and is directly uploaded into Epicor.

  1. Hello Ryan. I’m trying to upload “weight” for a part. I’m using “NetWeight” and “NetWeightUOM”. When I check to validate columns everything is OK. I have the weight UOM up and running. When I process the data it gives me a “Weight UOM makes reference to an invalid value”. I’ve try everything I can think of and nothing works. Any ideas?

    PS I’m using Epicor 10.0.700.2

    1. Hi José,

      The error is with the UOM you have entered in the NetWeightUOM field. The NetWeightUOM field references the UOM Class “Weight”, so it’s probably telling you that what you have entered in that field does not exist in the Weight UOM Class.

      My suggestion, go into Weight UOM class and make sure that what is in your NetWeightUOM field matches one of the entries in the Weight UOM class.

      1. I am trying to use the DMT for loading BOM (creating one). I have successfully used the DMT to create the parts. I have all the required field filled, but I am getting an error:1001 1000 Method () Table Unexpected error – see appserver logs.
        Any idea what I am doing wrong?

        1. Eldad,

          Unfortunately for unexpected errors it is very hard to say without actually looking at the appserver logs. However, because you’re working on a BOM I’d assume this is a load with a lot of fields. We have run into issues in the past where the DMT load can have so many fields that DMT ends up “freaking out” and essentially rejecting lines because of a communication error or timeout. Again, without looking at the appserver log it’s hard to say.

          I don’t want to leave you with just that answer though so I’ll give you a suggestion that I end up using on larger loads. I suggest trimming the load down to the absolute bare minimum – just the required fields – and then try the load again. If you receive the same error, I believe it may be necessary to call Epicor support to receive assistance. That means regardless of what you’re loading field wise, the error will occur and you will need to find what is causing it. Upon loading the bare minimum, if you don’t receive any errors, sparingly add fields back to your upload and see when the error is caused. This way, even if you still have to contact Epicor support, you will have a specific base to tell them what is making the lines error out.

  2. Hi Ryan, I am trying to upload FA data from Excel to Epicor thru DMT, where do I start? which template should I use? Asset.csv, Asset Register detail or asset addition? or I have to use all

    1. Vickky,

      You will need to know what fields and functionality you want to achieve in order to fill out a template for a specific table or set of tables. By using “Field Help” in the “Help” menu (this must be done within the specific program – For example “Asset addition entry”), selecting Technical Details, and clicking on a field, the technical details will show the Binding of most fields. It will show in the format of TABLE.FIELD

      After having the required fields in your template, you can add the other fields you will be using by identifying them with Field Help. We provide guidance in building templates for our clients to make sure the functionality they want is achieved.

  3. Hello Ryan, I’ve been using DMT, very close to my dateline. I’m gettin an error during PO header upload; invalid Boolean value” in my POnum field. Is driving me crazy, especially when all my data is validated. My company configure starting PO is “60000” my uploads starts with 50000, still the same error. Please any comments will help me tremendously. Thanks

    How can I add the ResourceGroupID using the BOO template? I’ve tried it several times, but when checking out the parts added it doesn’t show any resourcegroup added.


    1. From one of our project managers, Jessica Becher: It’s not necessarily a cut and dry answer, but basically it depends on the order you are uploading their data. You need to upload resource groups and resources first. Then need to upload all operations. When doing the BOO import, you need to check out the parts to a specific resource group for data loads (DMT ECO group, for example), then do a separate BOO update load for those checked out parts, with operations and resource group w/ resource groupid and resource group name and make sure the opdtlsequence is included. Without knowing specifics it’s hard to troubleshoot, but that would be my advice.

  7. I’m using the DMT tool in Epicor 10, can I upload data to a Custom UD field I have created. If so do I need to use the dbase field with or without the _c at the end of the UD field name. if custom names are not supports can I use the UD field name that used to be used in Epicor 9 eg. Shortchar01,Number01

  8. We are trying to DMT a list of PDF files into Epicor 10. We have been advised to use the Job operation Attachment tab but this is not what we are looking for. We do not want to constantly upload the files for the parts we are running through. Instead we would have the files attached at the part level so that anytime a job is made with that part, those attachments would pull.

    We have tried this through the Engineering/Bill of Operations tab but the added columns for file name and doc type keep throwing an “INVALID” flag when we verify columns.

    I know adding attachments is as easy as drag and drop but not when you have over 3000 files that need to be uploaded 1 by 1 to specific operations.

    Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
